UK Ambassador's Historic Visit to Agadir: Strengthening UK-Morocco Ties in Trade, Tourism, and Agriculture

Strengthening UK-Morocco Relations Through Enhanced Maritime and Tourism Initiatives

In a landmark visit, the UK Ambassador to Morocco, Alex Pinfield, made his first official trip to Agadir, where he engaged in pivotal discussions aimed at bolstering cooperation between the UK and Morocco in the sectors of trade, tourism, and agriculture. The visit, which took place from April 28 to 30, was part of a broader initiative to explore regional opportunities within Morocco and highlighted the launch of a new direct maritime route connecting Agadir to London Gateway. This route is anticipated to significantly enhance trade efficiency, facilitating the swift movement of goods while also prioritizing environmental sustainability.

During his stay, Ambassador Pinfield met with key representatives from the Agence Nationale des Ports (ANP) and Marsa Maroc to discuss the operational benefits of this new maritime connection. With the capacity to reduce transit times for Moroccan fresh produce entering the UK by as much as two days, this route stands as a testament to Morocco's growing role as a vital supplier of agricultural products. Additionally, by shifting cargo from road to sea transport, it is expected to decrease carbon emissions by approximately 70%, thus contributing to global sustainability efforts.

Tourism Growth and Collaborative Agricultural Practices

Ambassador Pinfield's agenda also included meetings with officials from the tourism sector, where he engaged with representatives from Agadir Airport, the Centre Régional du Tourisme, and notable airlines such as easyJet and TUI. The discussions revolved around enhancing the experience for British tourists in Agadir, which has recently seen an impressive influx of visitors from the UK, accounting for nearly a quarter of all arrivals in 2025. With approximately 113,511 British tourists visiting Agadir from January to April of the same year, the focus on improving tourism infrastructure is well-timed.

Furthermore, the ambassador visited the Diaf cooperative, a significant agricultural hub where a variety of produce, including berries and citrus fruits, are cultivated and processed for export to the UK. The British Embassy emphasized Morocco's pivotal role in supplying fresh produce to the UK market, highlighting a robust agricultural partnership. Reports indicate that between July 2024 and June 2025, Morocco exported about 19,000 tons of blueberries valued at $144 million to the UK, marking a remarkable increase in agricultural exports.

In addition to trade and tourism discussions, the visit encompassed talks regarding infrastructure development in preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, in which Morocco and the UK are collaborating on various projects. This partnership, formalized in a Memorandum of Understanding signed last year, aims to ensure that the upcoming tournament fosters long-term opportunities through enhanced sports infrastructure and economic development.
