Universal Music Group Launches Def Jam Recordings in North Africa, Strengthening Hip-Hop Presence

Def Jam Recordings Expands to North Africa

Universal Music Group (UMG) has officially launched Def Jam Recordings North Africa, establishing its headquarters in Casablanca, Morocco. This new division of the iconic hip-hop label aims to extend its influence across the entire Maghreb region, providing a vital platform for North African hip-hop artists to gain global recognition. UMG's initiative is designed to enhance the accessibility, reach, and opportunities available for these artists, allowing them to showcase their talents on an international scale.

The launch of Def Jam North Africa not only broadens the label's global presence but also reinforces UMG's strategic positioning within the MENA region. According to the latest data from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), this region experienced a remarkable revenue growth of 15.2% in 2025, making it the joint second-fastest growing market worldwide, alongside Sub-Saharan Africa. This growth underscores the increasing significance of the MENA music scene, particularly in the realm of hip-hop.

Empowering Local Talent and Fostering Collaboration

Following similar launches in various regions, including Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, the UK, India, Sweden, and China, Def Jam North Africa is poised to identify and elevate emerging talent from the vibrant local hip-hop scene. The label plans to focus on artist development, fostering collaborations, and providing access to international opportunities through the expansive UMG and Def Jam networks. Adam Granite, Executive Vice President of Market Development at UMG, expressed his enthusiasm about this strategic move, noting, "This is an important strategic step for a region we’ve long believed has incredible artistic talent." He emphasized UMG's commitment to investing in local artists and the unique potential of North African music.

Tunji Balogun, Chairman and CEO of Def Jam Recordings, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the label's foundation on powerful storytelling and cultural energy. "North Africa is home to an incredible wave of creativity and talent," Balogun remarked, emphasizing that this launch will help amplify these voices on a global stage. UMG has a history of commitment to the region, having launched Universal Music Morocco in Casablanca in 2020 as the first major music company to establish a standalone office there, and since then, it has expanded its operations significantly.

Patrick Boulos, CEO of UMG MENA, described the launch of Def Jam North Africa as a transformative moment for the company's business in the region. He noted the success of local artists, who are increasingly finding audiences beyond their home markets, particularly in Europe. Sylvain Mahy, Managing Director of UMG Morocco and North Africa, stated that this new division represents a logical progression in UMG's successful regional growth strategy, reinforcing their dedication to nurturing artists and evolving the music ecosystem in North Africa.

The official debut of Def Jam Recordings North Africa took place during a launch event in Casablanca, attended by industry professionals, artists, songwriters, and cultural figures from across the region. The label's initial focus will be on collaborations with newly signed artists such as Najm, alongside newcomers SHR and Aujiss, while also engaging with renowned Moroccan producers like Oldygothesound, Bayadis, and Nouvo. This initiative marks a significant step forward in championing North African hip-hop and its unique cultural narratives.
