Unprecedented Surge in Tomato Prices in Morocco
Morocco is currently experiencing an unprecedented increase in tomato prices, with reports indicating that the cost of a kilogram has surged to approximately 14 dirhams in several markets. This dramatic rise has triggered widespread dissatisfaction among consumers, as highlighted by local media outlet Hespress. The surge in prices has prompted professionals in the agricultural sector to urgently call for intervention to regulate exports and restore a balance between domestic and international markets amid rising price pressures.
The Impact of Intensive Exports
Industry experts attribute this price hike to the intense exportation of tomatoes, which are considered a staple in daily consumption. They emphasize that this trend has directly impacted the availability of tomatoes in local markets, leading to demands for capping export operations. Abderrazak Chabi, president of the Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Traders Association in Casablanca, expressed concern that current export levels are "depleting the local market." He noted that, despite improved groundwater levels this year, what he termed "increasing exports" has continued to apply pressure on local supply.
Moreover, the entry of African markets into the importation of Moroccan tomatoes has exacerbated the situation. Chabi explained that a portion of the production that does not meet the quality standards required by European markets is being redirected to African markets, while the local market suffers from a supply shortage. Regarding price forecasts, he asserted that without restrictions on exports, prices will remain elevated. He believes that halting exports could lead to a rapid decrease in prices, positively affecting consumers' purchasing power.
Chabi concluded by underscoring the necessity for regulatory authorities to intervene in export operations or to impose limitations, aiming to alleviate the imbalances currently affecting the market and to ease the burden on consumers in light of the soaring prices.
