Traffic Incident Report: A Week of Alarming Statistics
Between April 13 and April 19, a total of 2,399 traffic accidents were recorded in urban areas, resulting in 25 fatalities and injuring 3,292 individuals, including 147 with serious injuries. These concerning figures illustrate the ongoing challenges faced by urban traffic management and safety enforcement.
The General Directorate of National Security attributed the primary causes of these accidents, in order of frequency, to driver inattention, failure to yield, excessive speed, pedestrian inattention, inadequate safe distance, loss of vehicle control, changing lanes without signaling, illegal lane changes, disregarding stop signs, driving in prohibited directions, left-side driving, ignoring red traffic lights, driving under the influence, and improper overtaking maneuvers.
Enforcement Actions and Financial Implications
In response to the rising number of traffic violations, law enforcement agencies undertook significant monitoring and enforcement measures, resulting in the documentation of 54,440 violations. Authorities compiled 8,317 reports that were forwarded to the public prosecutor's office and processed 46,123 on-the-spot fines. The total revenue from collected fines reached an impressive 10,230,075 dirhams. Furthermore, 5,774 vehicles were impounded, 8,317 documents were confiscated, and 727 vehicles were suspended from operation due to various infractions.
This report underscores the pressing need for improved road safety measures and public awareness campaigns to mitigate the rising trend of traffic incidents and ensure the safety of all road users.
