Union of Transport Professionals Urges Immediate Government Action
The General Union of International and National Transport Professionals has made a pressing appeal to the Moroccan government for urgent intervention to support local drivers whose trucks were destroyed during the recent security upheavals in Mali. The drivers have suffered substantial financial losses that have directly impacted their livelihoods. In its request, the union highlighted that many drivers who managed to return to Morocco are now enduring difficult social and economic conditions due to the loss of their trucks, which are essential for their work and primary source of income. The union is calling for the government to give appropriate attention to their situation and implement measures to help them recover from these losses.
This appeal comes on the heels of heightened security tensions in Mali, which have raised significant concerns among international transport professionals, particularly after several Moroccan trucks were targeted and set ablaze on routes leading to the capital, Bamako. Previously, professional bodies had warned drivers about the precarious security situation in Mali, advising them to avoid areas experiencing unrest. The union had also reported the presence of Moroccan drivers stranded in Mali before some were able to exit dangerous areas with the help of security escorts.
The union is insisting that government support should directly benefit the affected drivers by facilitating initiatives that would allow truck owners to resume their activities and recover a portion of their losses. The organization emphasizes that for many professionals, losing a truck equates to losing their only source of income.
