U.S. Establishes Regional Drone Training Center in Morocco to Enhance African Military Capabilities

The United States has officially announced the establishment of a regional drone training center in Morocco, aimed at bolstering the surveillance and intelligence capabilities of African armed forces. This pivotal announcement was made during the African Land Forces Summit held in March, as reported by various media outlets.

According to General Christopher Donahue, the commander of the U.S. Army for Europe and Africa, this training center will focus on equipping drone operators from multiple African armies with the necessary skills and knowledge. However, the initiative transcends mere technical training; it is designed to enhance tactical coordination among partner nations, promote information sharing, and cultivate unified strategies to tackle regional security challenges effectively.

The inaugural phase of this ambitious project is set to coincide with the military exercise dubbed "African Lion 2026." This exercise will initiate its first training module, accommodating 16 participants, and is slated to take place from April 20 to May 8. Jointly organized by the United States and Morocco, this extensive multinational exercise will involve a comprehensive combination of land, air, naval, and cyber training operations, taking place simultaneously across Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal, and engaging 19 African countries alongside numerous international allies.

The decision to locate this training center in Morocco highlights the kingdom's rapidly expanding role as a security ally for Washington in North Africa. The bilateral relations between the United States and Morocco have seen substantial strengthening in recent years, particularly after Morocco solidified its status as a strategic partner following the signing of the Abraham Accords, which aimed to normalize relations with Israel. Furthermore, Morocco has distinguished itself as the foremost importer of U.S. military equipment on the African continent. A recent report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) indicates that U.S. arms constituted nearly 60% of Morocco's military acquisitions between 2021 and 2025.

Beyond the technical training provided at this center, its establishment underscores Washington's strategic intent to amplify its presence in Africa amid growing competition with other global powers, such as Russia and China, which are also vying for military and technological influence on the continent.
