US Reiterates Support for Morocco's Sovereignty Over Sahara

The United States has once again confirmed its recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara, as stated by Morocco's foreign ministry on Wednesday. During a press conference, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau expressed this affirmation following his meeting in Rabat with Morocco's Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita. Landau highlighted the importance of addressing the prolonged conflict, stating, "We are trying within the framework of the most recent Security Council resolution [Resolution 2797] to bring a peaceful resolution to the conflict that has been ongoing for an unacceptable duration." He stressed that the matter cannot continue to be unresolved for another 50, 150, or even 200 years.

Furthermore, the statement from the Moroccan ministry noted that Landau reiterated the unwavering support of the United States for Morocco's serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal, which he described as the sole foundation for achieving a just and lasting resolution to the territorial dispute concerning the Sahara. Additionally, the Deputy Secretary of State emphasized the U.S. support for American companies looking to invest and conduct business in the Sahara region, indicating a commitment to fostering economic opportunities in the area.
