Search Underway for Missing US Soldiers in Morocco
Two United States Army soldiers have mysteriously vanished in the southwestern region of Morocco on the night of Saturday, May 2, 2026, amidst the multinational military exercise known as African Lion, which represents the largest annual deployment of American forces in Africa. The disappearance took place around 9:00 PM near the Cap Draa Training Area, close to Tan Tan, a coastal region along the Atlantic characterized by cliffs, mountainous terrain, and semi-desert landscapes.
According to a U.S. defense official, the soldiers were not engaged in operational activities at the time of their disappearance. "They were not actively participating in any training. The exercises for the day had concluded, and to our understanding, they were on a recreational hike," the official informed the Associated Press.
The soldiers were last seen near ocean cliffs. After failing to return as expected, a joint search operation was immediately initiated by both U.S. and Moroccan forces. "The incident remains under investigation, and the search continues," stated the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).
In the meantime, another U.S. defense official, communicating via email to Reuters, noted that "initial reports suggest that the two soldiers may have fallen into the ocean... I can confirm that this incident is not related to terrorism." Search efforts are utilizing helicopters, boats, divers, and specialized mountain rescue units, deployed in an area that presents significant geographical challenges.
"The soldiers were last seen near ocean cliffs in the vicinity of the Cap Draa Training Area during a scheduled exercise. When they did not return as expected, U.S. and Moroccan personnel immediately launched a joint search effort," the same official elaborated to the Associated Press.
The African Lion exercise, which has been ongoing since 2004, this year brings together over 7,000 personnel from more than 30 countries across Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal. The maneuvers commenced in April and are set to conclude in early May. This training operation, regarded as the largest of its kind conducted by the United States on the African continent, aims to enhance security cooperation and improve preparedness for global crises. However, it is not without its history of incidents; in 2012, two U.S. Marines tragically lost their lives in a helicopter accident in Agadir during these same exercises.
The disappearance of the soldiers occurs against a backdrop of regional instability, particularly in countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, where recent coups have reshaped alliances with Western powers.
