U.S. to Establish Drone Training Center in Morocco to Enhance African Military Capabilities

New Regional Drone Training Initiative in Morocco

In a significant development for military collaboration in Africa, the United States is set to inaugurate a regional drone training center in Morocco this year. This initiative aims to equip African forces with emerging technologies to effectively address global threats. The establishment of this center is aligned with the upcoming African Lion military exercises, which are the largest annual training event in Africa led by the U.S. military, scheduled to take place from April 20 to May 8 across various Moroccan cities.

Strengthening Partnerships Through Military Training

The U.S. Army's Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), communicated via email that this training will not only enhance the capabilities of U.S. forces and their partners in confronting global challenges but also lay the groundwork for future training activities, capacity development, and institutional improvements. The spokesperson emphasized that any forthcoming training projects or collaborations will be executed in close coordination with African partners, adhering to U.S. government protocols. This collaborative approach aims to bolster African-led solutions and reinforce shared preparedness among the forces involved.

General Christopher Donahue, the commander of U.S. forces in Europe and Africa, recently announced the plans for the drone training center in Morocco, with aspirations to expand similar initiatives to other regions of the continent. He highlighted that the center will provide sustainable and long-lasting capabilities while being mindful of local culture, intelligence, and the operational environment.

Morocco stands as a key ally of the United States, having established a Free Trade Agreement since 2005 and maintaining robust security and defense ties, further evidenced by the joint military exercises known as African Lion, which have been conducted for over two decades. These strategic relations have remained steadfast and have even been strengthened during the current administration, with President Donald Trump recognizing Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara in December 2020 during his first term in office.
