In a surprising turn of events during the 2026 event, Moroccan runner Hamza Sahli emerged victorious, reclaiming the title for North Africa after several years of local athletes dominating the podium. Sahli, an Olympic participant from the Tokyo games, showcased an exceptional performance that culminated in an electrifying sprint finish along the Recoletos walkway.
This year's race is noted for its narrowest margin of victory in recent memory, as Sahli finished just one second ahead of 2025 champion Vicente Viciosa. Viciosa reflected on the race, emphasizing that it was highly tactical and controlled, stating, "I focused more on my position than on my time.
