PowerCo Expands Electric Vehicle Battery Operations
Volkswagen's subsidiary, PowerCo, has announced a significant investment of approximately €470 million to enhance its collaboration with the Chinese manufacturer, Gotion. This partnership aims to bolster Volkswagen's ambitions within the electric mobility sector, positioning the company as a leader in this rapidly evolving market. The initiative includes the establishment of three joint ventures located in Spain, Slovakia, and Morocco, which are set to accelerate the creation of a regional battery supply chain aimed specifically at supporting the European electric vehicle market.
In Valencia, Spain, PowerCo is already in the process of constructing a state-of-the-art factory dedicated to the production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. This facility is expected to be operated as a joint venture in the near future. Additionally, the existing Gotion facility in Surany, Slovakia, is also slated to transition into a joint venture, further solidifying the partnership's foothold in the region. Meanwhile, Morocco will witness the establishment of a new facility focused on producing materials for battery cell manufacturing, with all three ventures being operated collaboratively.
Comprehensive Battery Supply Chain Development
PowerCo's strategic plan involves a substantial investment aimed at acquiring a 49% stake in the Slovakian and Moroccan entities, while Gotion is expected to contribute approximately €1.1 billion for a similar stake in the Valencian joint venture. Thomas Schmall, a member of Volkswagen's board, emphasized that Volkswagen is pioneering efforts as the first European automaker to cover the entire battery value chain, from development through to raw materials and production. This comprehensive approach is believed to be instrumental in achieving Volkswagen's goal of leading the electric mobility landscape by 2030.
The cooperation between Gotion and Volkswagen has been in effect since 2020, with PowerCo focusing on the development and production of battery cells for the Volkswagen Group since 2022. Notably, production commenced at the Salzgitter site in late 2025, while an additional facility is being developed in Canada. However, these sites remain unaffected by the latest joint venture agreements. Volkswagen, PowerCo, and Gotion's collaboration highlights a strategic partnership that continues to evolve, underscoring their commitment to innovation in battery technology.
