Wael Mohya: The Bundesliga Star with Dual Nationality Options

Wael Mohya is rapidly emerging as one of the brightest talents in the Bundesliga, having already made waves with the German junior national teams. This young player from Borussia Mönchengladbach possesses all the qualities necessary to potentially shine as a key player for the German senior national team in the future. However, the path to that illustrious career remains uncertain, as the 17-year-old holds dual citizenship—both German and Moroccan. Consequently, it comes as no surprise that the Moroccan Football Federation has expressed interest in securing the services of this promising attacking midfielder.

Mohya himself has confirmed that he has been approached by the Moroccan football authorities. In an interview with kicker, he stated, "There has been contact, yes. But I cannot say much more about it. I have not made a decision yet and I am taking my time. Let’s see how things unfold." This careful consideration is crucial, especially given the recent case of Paul Wanner, who chose to represent Austria, leaving the German Football Association (DFB) empty-handed.

Despite his Moroccan roots, Mohya was born in Mettmann, North Rhine-Westphalia, and has grown up in Germany. He joined Borussia Mönchengladbach at the tender age of seven and has since accumulated valuable experience, having played a total of seven international matches for the German U16, U17, and U18 teams. Currently, he is competing with the German U18 squad for a chance to participate in the U19 European Championships scheduled for 2027. The team, managed by Hanno Balitsch, is set to face Bosnia and Herzegovina on March 25, Israel on March 28, and Austria on March 31. Recently, Mohya found the back of the net during international fixtures against Norway and Denmark, showcasing his scoring prowess.

The Gladbach academy product made his debut in the DFB-Pokal on October 28, 2025, against Karlsruhe, and followed it up with his Bundesliga debut on December 13 against Wolfsburg. Since then, he has been regularly utilized as a substitute and recently started matches against Union Berlin and St. Pauli. In total, he has participated in twelve professional matches for the Foals, marking his first goal in a 1-4 defeat against Bayern Munich.
