Severe Weather Forecast for Morocco
According to the Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), the country is bracing for a significant weather event this weekend, characterized by a heat wave accompanied by thunderstorms and heavy rain. From Friday through Sunday, temperatures are expected to soar between 45°C and 47°C in several provinces, including Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Taroudant, Tata, and Zagora. This extreme heat has prompted the DGM to issue an orange alert, indicating a high level of vigilance is required.
In addition to the higher temperatures, other regions will experience slightly lower, yet still intense heat, with temperatures ranging from 42°C to 45°C. Provinces such as Fquih Ben Salah, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Beni Mellal, and Marrakech will all face these elevated temperatures. Meanwhile, coastal areas like Essaouira and Safi will see temperatures between 39°C and 42°C during the same period. The forecast also indicates that regions like Sidi Slimane, Benslimane, and Kénitra will have temperatures hovering between 40°C and 45°C on Friday and Saturday.
Thunderstorms and Rainfall Expected
In addition to the heat, thunderstorms are anticipated, particularly on Friday from 2 PM to 11 PM, affecting the provinces of Aousserd and Oued Ed-Dahab, which may receive between 40 to 50 mm of rain. Additionally, provinces such as Boulemane, Guercif, and Figuig can expect rainfall between 20 to 30 mm from 5 PM to 11 PM on the same day. The DGM's warnings highlight the need for residents to prepare for possible weather-related disruptions and to remain vigilant during this period of extreme weather conditions.
