Recognizing the Importance of Lakes in Morocco

On Thursday, August 27, the world commemorates World Lakes Day, an international occasion that emphasizes the significance of these natural spaces and their critical role in preserving biodiversity. This day serves as a stark reminder of the increasing threats that lakes face, necessitating enhanced efforts to safeguard them and maintain their ecological balance.

Morocco is home to numerous lakes, encompassing mountainous, lowland, and coastal varieties, which represent a vital natural and environmental asset for the kingdom. However, in recent years, these areas have faced mounting pressures due to the repercussions of climate change and consecutive years of drought, compounded by human activities linked to reckless exploitation and pollution. Such factors jeopardize their natural equilibrium and adversely affect the associated biodiversity.

Call to Action for Biodiversity Conservation

This occasion in the Moroccan context underscores the urgent need to raise awareness regarding the importance of lakes and the necessity of preserving them. This can be achieved by fostering sustainable behaviors toward these ecosystems while simultaneously curtailing various forms of exploitation and pollution. Furthermore, there is a critical need to bolster the legal and institutional frameworks that can effectively protect biodiversity and ensure the sustainability of these natural resources for future generations.

The Economic, Social, and Environmental Council highlighted these issues in a report released last May regarding biodiversity in Morocco. The report noted the increasing pressures on water and food resources, alongside the accelerating impacts of climate change, which reveal the structural role of ecosystems as a self-sustaining natural infrastructure.

Despite significant progress in awareness, the report emphasized that the understanding of biodiversity's importance and its integration into policies and practices remains inconsistent and limited across different stakeholders and sectors. It criticized the fragmented approach to biodiversity, which often reduces it to a few notable species or well-known natural environments, reflecting a shortfall in public action. Biodiversity is not adequately integrated into planning mechanisms and public policy approaches, which hinders effective environmental governance.

The council urged for the swift establishment of a comprehensive law specifically addressing biodiversity, with a focus on its effective implementation through the establishment of an institutional mechanism dedicated to the regular and systematic updating of the national strategy and action plan for biodiversity. It also called for the development and execution of a national ecological restoration program targeting areas of high biodiversity value, using scientific criteria and measurable indicators, while ensuring rigorous inter-sectoral coordination to expedite the restoration of natural habitats.

Strengthening the legal framework and raising awareness about the protection of lakes in Morocco is crucial, given the fundamental role these areas play in maintaining biodiversity. In addition to their environmental significance, the United Nations notes that lakes contribute to climate regulation by cooling the planet, absorbing floodwaters, and sequestering carbon.
