ESPOD Launches New Space for Women Entrepreneurs in Casablanca

In a significant development for women entrepreneurs in Morocco, ESPOD (Espace Point de Départ) has inaugurated a permanent space within the historic old medina of Casablanca. This innovative facility is dedicated to promoting and selling creations by female entrepreneurs, artisans, and cooperatives from across the nation. Supported by the Crédit du Maroc Foundation, this initiative aims to enhance access to customers and diversify marketing avenues for these talented women.

The newly launched space is designed to be accessible to both individuals and businesses, showcasing a wide array of artisanal and food products. Visitors can explore a variety of offerings, including pastries, spices, cosmetics marketed as natural and organic, handwoven textiles, traditional handmade clothing, and local products such as couscous sourced from the Moroccan Sahara. Additionally, businesses can select unique gifts for their clients, partners, and employees from this vibrant collection.

However, the mission of ESPOD goes beyond merely displaying products. It also aims to provide sustained support to women by facilitating their concrete access to the market, thereby bolstering the viability and growth of their enterprises. Initial training and the establishment of a business represent just the first steps; ensuring access to buyers and distribution channels is essential for long-term success.

Khadija Idrissi Janati, the national president of ESPOD, advocates for an evolution towards activities that can sustainably generate income, foster growth, and create value. The organization's stated ambition is to empower beneficiaries to move beyond mere subsistence and enhance their economic independence.

The operational model of this space also incorporates a commitment to knowledge transfer. Participating entrepreneurs and cooperatives will dedicate two hours per week to mentor other women supported by ESPOD. This initiative is designed to ensure that the professional skills and experiences of these successful women benefit new project initiators.

The Crédit du Maroc Foundation has played a pivotal role in the creation and development of this venue, with architect Salma Dioury providing her design expertise and overseeing the construction work pro bono.

With over 35 years of experience, ESPOD reports that it supports more than 500 women each year through a combination of professional training, entrepreneurship assistance, preschool education, and awareness of rights and health. The organization runs specific programs such as Sayidati Al Moukawila (SAM) and Khatwa, in partnership with institutional entities including the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity and Entraide Nationale.
