France Returns Remarkable 72 Million-Year-Old Dinosaur Fossils to Morocco

Historical Repatriation of Ancient Fossils

In a significant move reflecting international cooperation in cultural heritage protection, France has returned a collection of remarkable fossils to Morocco. This collection, which consists of dinosaur teeth, was originally sourced from the rich geological basin of Morocco and recently repatriated due to collaborative efforts between Moroccan and French authorities. The fossils were seized by French customs in February 2025 during an attempted smuggling operation in Menton, where they were being transported unlawfully via a freight truck traveling from Spain to Italy, as indicated in a statement from the Moroccan Ministry of Culture.

The batch of fossils includes nine pieces dating back to the Upper Cretaceous period, approximately 66 to 72 million years ago. Among these are teeth belonging to both extinct marine reptiles and distant relatives of modern crocodiles, showcasing the diverse prehistoric life that once inhabited this region. This restitution not only symbolizes the successful coordination between Moroccan cultural officials and their French counterparts but also underscores the shared commitment of both nations to combat the illegal trafficking of cultural artifacts while preserving Morocco's natural and geological heritage for future generations.
