Marrakech's Financial Resources: A Key to Local Development and Public Services

Recent statistics released by the General Treasury of the Kingdom regarding the evolution of tax revenues for local authorities have reignited discussions about financial resources at the local level and their impact on development and public services. This issue holds particular significance for the Marrakech region, given its considerable economic, tourist, and urban weight.

On a national level, tax revenues for local authorities reached 37.9 billion dirhams by the end of September 2026, marking a 14.1% increase compared to the same period last year. These revenues accounted for 87.3% of the total income of local authorities, indicating the crucial role that taxes and fees play in financing local budgets.

In the Marrakech-Safi region, the total income of local authorities was approximately 4.372 billion dirhams by the end of August 2026, according to data published based on the General Treasury's report. This figure represents about 11.1% of total nationally recorded revenues during the same period, with transferred resources constituting 55.1% of the revenues for local authorities in the region. It is essential to note that these figures relate to total revenues and do not solely represent tax collections.

These indicators gain additional importance considering the region's tourism status, which recorded tourist revenues estimated at around 25.96 billion dirhams during the first half of 2026, according to published data on the sector's performance.

The evolution of local financial resources raises questions about the extent to which these potentials translate into tangible improvements in the quality of essential services, maintenance of roads and sidewalks, development of public lighting, enhancement of cleanliness and green spaces, and the upgrading of neighborhoods that still face challenges in infrastructure and facilities.
