Meknes Launches Major Urban Upgrade Initiative
The city of Meknes, a prominent urban center in Morocco, is set to embark on a significant project aimed at upgrading underdeveloped neighborhoods. This initiative, announced by the urban development company Al Omrane in Fez-Meknes, involves an open tender for the second phase of the urban rehabilitation program. The estimated cost for this phase is approximately 47.49 million dirhams, which is equivalent to about 4.75 billion centimes.
Project Details and Objectives
According to the announcement of tender number AO/163/2026, published on October 12, the project will focus on urban rehabilitation works in neighborhoods lacking essential infrastructure within the municipal jurisdiction of Meknes. The deadline for submitting bids is set for November 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM. The technical details accompanying the tender indicate that the works will encompass various aspects of road development and liquid waste networks. This project aims to improve the basic infrastructure in the targeted areas, enhancing mobility, access to services, and addressing the deficiencies in urban equipment.
This initiative is essential in the ongoing effort to bridge the gap between different neighborhoods in the city, especially those still suffering from inadequate basic facilities, including roads, alleys, and sanitation networks. It is noteworthy that during the official events and inaugurations held in Meknes on the occasion of the Throne Day, the supplementary program for upgrading underdeveloped neighborhoods (phase two) was launched with a total financial envelope of 142 million dirhams. Funding for this important project is a joint effort between the Ministry of National Land Planning, Urban Planning, Housing, and City Policy, contributing 100 million dirhams, alongside the municipal contribution of 42 million dirhams. The program aims to enhance and equip 34 neighborhoods, including Al Othmania, Al Shahidiya, Al Mansouriya, Camellia, Sidi Bilal, Sidi Bouzkri, Hay Salam, Al Wifaq, and the Zarhounia subdivision.
