Moroccan Ambassador Highlights Transformative Vision at Florida International University

During a recent conference at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Morocco's Ambassador to the United States, Youssef Amrani, emphasized that Morocco aspires to be much more than a crossroads between continents. He stated that the Kingdom aims to contribute to solutions, seize opportunities, and fully engage in the significant transformations taking place globally. Addressing a diverse audience of American students, academics, and FIU faculty, Ambassador Amrani articulated Morocco's strategic objectives and its role on the international stage.

The conference, held at the Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs and moderated by Dean Dr. Shlomi Dinar, served as a platform to discuss Morocco’s future direction, its international partnerships, and the potential for growth in Moroccan-American relations. Ambassador Amrani noted that Morocco's geographical position, situated between Africa, Europe, the Arab world, and the Atlantic, has been transformed into a significant asset for dialogue, openness, and cooperation.

Under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco is undergoing profound economic transformations, developing modern infrastructure, and investing in key sectors such as industry, energy, and education. The ambassador remarked that Morocco does not choose between tradition and modernity; it harmoniously combines both. He highlighted the growing role of women in Morocco’s evolution, citing their increasing representation in universities, businesses, and public institutions as a testament to the changes within Moroccan society. For instance, the representation of women in the Moroccan Parliament has surged from just two in 1993 to 107 today, illustrating a significant shift towards inclusivity and emphasizing the essential role women play in the country's development.

Additionally, Ambassador Amrani elaborated on Morocco's clear economic ambitions, which include positioning the country as a production and investment hub capable of connecting markets and integrating into major international production chains. In a landscape where companies are seeking reliable partners and robust infrastructure, Morocco is uniquely equipped to provide these advantages, thus opening new avenues for collaboration with the United States. He underscored that the goal is to transcend mere trade exchanges and to foster joint projects in production, innovation, and access to new markets, reminding attendees that Morocco is the only African country to have established a free trade agreement with the U.S.

Addressing pressing international challenges, the ambassador reiterated Morocco's diplomatic principles, which focus on clarity, commitment, and sustainable partnerships. He stated that in the face of geopolitical crises and tensions, Morocco maintains a simple conviction: stability cannot be sustained without economic development, regional cooperation, and prospects for its people. This philosophy is particularly evident in Morocco's commitment to Africa and the Royal Initiative aimed at facilitating Sahel countries' access to the Atlantic Ocean, transforming geographic isolation into economic opportunity and enhancing international market access.

In discussing the strategic relationship between Morocco and the United States, Ambassador Amrani emphasized the shared ambition to leverage their strong political and strategic ties for mutual economic prosperity. He pointed out that southern Florida, particularly Miami, plays a pivotal role in bridging the two nations, as Miami serves as an entry point to Latin America and the Caribbean, while Morocco provides essential connections to Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic region. This symbiotic relationship opens doors for concrete economic cooperation, including direct air links between Casablanca and Miami and the upcoming partnership between Miami-Dade and Casablanca-Settat scheduled for 2025, which could lead to new ventures in trade, logistics, tourism, innovation, and economic exchanges.

In response to student inquiries about the future of diplomacy, Ambassador Amrani noted that modern diplomacy extends beyond government relations; it encompasses collaboration in businesses, universities, research laboratories, and the sectors shaping the global economy. He stressed the importance of universities in strengthening ties between Morocco and the U.S., advocating for increased academic exchanges and joint research, particularly in areas such as water, energy, climate resilience, and women's entrepreneurship. Ambassador Amrani concluded by reiterating that while governments may forge agreements, it is the women and men being educated today who will ultimately bring these initiatives to fruition. He reaffirmed Morocco's commitment to deepening its historic relationship with the United States, aiming to transform this exceptional legacy into new opportunities for cooperation, growth, and progress for both peoples.
