Morocco's Role in the International Anti-Fraud Initiative
In a significant collaborative effort, Morocco has joined forces with 30 other countries in an international operation aimed at identifying and addressing fraudulent activities that have led to the discovery of over $39 billion in funds and cryptocurrencies linked to such activities. The operation, known as "Confrontation Ghost," was spearheaded by the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Interior and took place from July 1 to September 30, 2026. This initiative was executed in concert with INTERPOL and various private-sector partners, demonstrating a unified global stance against cross-border digital fraud, including the alarming use of artificial intelligence in financial misconduct and online sexual extortion.
The results of this extensive operation were unveiled on October 22, during the 13th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, held in Vienna, Austria. The authorities from the participating nations, alongside their partners, are now actively working on recovering the assets that were identified throughout this crucial operation.
Significant Outcomes of the Operation
Throughout the three-month duration of "Confrontation Ghost," law enforcement agencies successfully identified more than 15,500 victims and apprehended around 3,500 suspects. The operation resulted in over 960 arrests, multiple searches at 29 fraud centers, and the deactivation of more than 570 social media accounts that were utilized for criminal endeavors. Moreover, authorities managed to pinpoint over 4,126 bank accounts associated with these illicit activities, showcasing the extensive reach of the fraud networks involved.
This operation was not only a testament to the power of international cooperation but also highlighted the importance of private-sector collaboration, with major companies such as Meta, TikTok, Huawei, Mastercard, and Crypto.com participating in the initiative. The participating countries exchanged more than 9,000 intelligence pieces, which were instrumental in revealing the tactics employed by criminal networks to deceive victims and launder money across international borders. This endeavor underscores Morocco’s commitment to combating fraud and its active role in global efforts to ensure a safer financial landscape.
