A New Chapter for Dar America: Celebrating Cultural Exchange in Casablanca

Dar America Closes Its Historic Doors in Casablanca

On April 7, the American mission in Morocco held a ceremony to commemorate the closure of the historic Dar America building located in the Gauthier neighborhood of Casablanca. This event marks a significant transition as the American consulate prepares to relocate to a new facility in Casa Finance City, where a modern iteration of Dar America will take shape.

For over eighty years, this cultural center has served multiple generations of Moroccans, and this transition is especially poignant as the United States and Morocco celebrate 250 years of partnership. The closing ceremony was attended by alumni, leaders, educators, former staff, members, and friends, all gathering to pay tribute to the legacy of Dar America, a symbol of cultural exchange, education, and innovation.

A Legacy of Cultural Exchange

Since its establishment in Place Bel Air in the mid-20th century, Dar America has been much more than just a cultural center; it has been a vital bridge connecting Moroccan youth, professionals, and families with the values, opportunities, and spirit of the United States. From its beginnings as a residence for American consular officers in the 1940s to its transformation into a dynamic hub dedicated to American cultural education, STEM learning, and EducationUSA counsel in the 1970s, Dar America has played a pivotal role in fostering mutual understanding and respect between the two nations.

The ceremony highlighted the profound impact of Dar America, which is deeply woven into the historical fabric of Casablanca. The center has hosted thousands of events, workshops, and forums, including inspiring initiatives in the creative industries and pioneering skills development and employability programs, empowering Moroccan youth to chase their dreams. It has offered a direct point of contact with the United States, inspiring generations to explore new ideas, embrace innovation, and forge lasting friendships.

“Today marks the end of an era for the Gauthier building, whose walls have witnessed historic moments in U.S.-Morocco relations. The U.S. government has maintained a presence at Place Bel Air since at least 1944, first as a residence for American diplomats, and then as the home of Dar America, a symbol of friendship and collaboration for over 80 years. The legacy of the building will endure in the memories of those who walked its halls and in the continuity of Dar America’s work in its new home,” stated Consul General Marissa Scott.

The ceremony also featured speeches from former Moroccan participants in American exchange programs and local partners, all emphasizing the center's role in promoting STEM education and cultural dialogue. Attendees shared testimonies on how Dar America has shaped their careers, broadened their horizons, and strengthened the bonds of friendship between Morocco and the United States.

“As we bid farewell to this iconic place, we invite the community to celebrate the achievements of Dar America while looking forward to a new chapter at Casa Finance City. Together, we will continue to build bridges, inspire innovation, and strengthen the partnership between the United States and Morocco,” added E. Rose Custis, Director of Dar America.

As Dar America prepares to open its doors at Casa Finance City, the American mission reaffirms its commitment to supporting the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers in Morocco. The new site will offer expanded resources, state-of-the-art facilities, and dynamic programming to continue the center’s mission of promoting American culture, its values, and educational excellence.
