Africa Sports Expo Commences in Casablanca
The fifth edition of the Africa Sports Expo officially commenced on October 8, 2026, in Casablanca, Morocco, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government officials, investors, industry experts, and sports professionals. This four-day event aims to foster discussions focused on the growth and development of the sports industry not only in Morocco but across the entire continent of Africa, as highlighted in the organizers’ press release. This year, Mali proudly takes the spotlight as the guest of honor, represented by a delegation headed by Abdoul Kassim Ibrahim Fomba, the country's Minister of Youth and Sports, who is also responsible for civic education and citizenship development. The event was graced by the presence of Abdellatif Maazouz, president of the Casablanca-Settat Regional Council, and Mehdi Sekkouri Alaoui, the president of the Moroccan Federation of Sports Professionals (FMPS).
The opening ceremony featured a tour and the inauguration of Mali’s pavilion, showcasing the nation’s sporting ambitions and initiatives. Sekkouri Alaoui emphasized the importance of leveraging the long-standing ties between Morocco and Mali into collaborative projects in various sectors, including sports, infrastructure, and training. He underscored the need for mutual exchanges of expertise to propel these initiatives forward.
Fostering Sustainable Sports Development
During the expo, Minister Fomba articulated that the advancement of sports transcends mere infrastructure development; it necessitates a consistent investment in human capital, talent cultivation, skill enhancement, and the creation of opportunities for the youth. He emphasized that the success of sports facilities relies heavily on trained professionals and robust support systems that enable them to realize their full potential. The afternoon session featured the second Africa Stadiums & Arenas Forum, which revolved around the theme "Building the Sports Infrastructure that Will Transform Africa." This forum brought together African and international specialists to engage in discussions about facility design, financing, management, and operations, with a focus on creating smart, sustainable, and financially viable venues that cater to the needs of local communities, attract investment, and promote urban development.
The overarching goal of the Africa Sports Expo is to establish connections between public authorities, businesses, investors, and sports federations, thereby transforming discussions into actionable collaborations. The event aspires to contribute to the development of a competitive and inclusive African sports industry, which promises significant economic and social benefits for the continent in the long run.
