Agadir's Fidadoc Festival: Nurturing a New Generation of Documentarians

Empowering Young Filmmakers at the Fidadoc Festival

The International Documentary Film Festival of Agadir, known as Fidadoc, is placing youth at the forefront of its initiatives. During its 17th edition, which runs from June 19 to June 24, 2026, the festival is dedicated to fostering a new wave of filmmakers who can innovate and enhance the documentary cinema landscape. One of the key features of this year’s festival is the launch of "La Ruche Documentaire," a specialized training workshop aimed at bringing together young directors from Morocco and around the world. This initiative emphasizes artistic support, professional guidance, and experience sharing, enabling participants to refine their projects and creative visions within a dynamic environment that combines theoretical learning with practical fieldwork.

In a statement to SNRTnews, Hatem Gerir, the coordinator of "La Ruche Documentaire," highlighted the festival's goal to mentor 60 young filmmakers from both national and international cinematography institutes and universities. This initiative is part of Fidadoc's commitment to nurturing emerging talents and enhancing their presence in the industry. Gerir emphasized the festival's intention to make this an annual event, equipping participants with the necessary tools and expertise to meet the demands of the international documentary sector.

A Platform for New Talent Development

"La Ruche Documentaire" serves as a significant talent incubator, offering newcomers the chance to develop their initial projects with the aim of showcasing them in future editions and benefiting from the festival’s annual artistic residency program. Clara Latmer, a participant in the workshop, described this section as one of the festival's highlights. Spanning an entire week, it provides direct exposure to industry professionals from both Morocco and abroad. Latmer noted that "La Ruche Documentaire" acts as a genuine platform for networking and exchange, allowing young filmmakers—especially graduates from Moroccan, French, and African diaspora film schools—to build professional connections while familiarizing themselves with the available support mechanisms. This intergenerational collaboration significantly promotes the integration of young talents into the production market.

Islam Zouanat, another participant, echoed these sentiments, stating that the workshop allows selected filmmakers to present their projects to the discerning eyes of producers, distributors, and experts, thus enhancing their chances of funding and production. The program also grants them privileged access to diverse works and the latest international productions, broadening their professional perspectives.

Furthermore, Anna Lawan, a project leader within "La Ruche," shared her insights on the value of this specialized environment. Although presenting a pitch to a panel of experts can be daunting, she described the experience as immensely valuable for structuring ideas, establishing professional contacts, and ultimately transforming her project into a completed documentary film. The Fidadoc Festival not only helps to cultivate the next generation of documentarians but also strengthens the overall documentary film scene.
