Air Transat Expands Its Horizons with New Transatlantic Routes

Air Transat's Growth Strategy and New Routes

Air Transat, one of Canada’s leading leisure airlines, is experiencing a significant expansion phase as it prepares for the busy summer travel season. According to recent data submitted to OAG, the airline is set to operate an average of 28 daily flights throughout July and August, a remarkable 5% increase over its previous record. This growth is largely attributed to the introduction and resumption of several transatlantic routes that have expanded its service offerings. Notable new routes include flights from Montreal to Agadir, Dakar, and Keflavik, as well as from Ottawa to London Gatwick, Quebec City to Marseille and Nantes, and from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Tirana. Although plans for a service from YYZ to Accra were scrapped earlier this year, the airline’s new connections showcase its commitment to enhancing travel options for its passengers.

Historic Launch and Market Insights

On June 18, Air Transat launched its inaugural flight from YYZ to Tirana International Airport (TIA), marking a historic milestone for both the airline and the airport itself. TIA is now home to its first-ever long-haul service, which is also the airport's longest nonstop operation in over two decades. This service is particularly significant as it represents Albania’s first scheduled flight connection to Canada. Air Transat’s service to TIA will operate weekly, a frequency that is not uncommon within the airline’s long-haul network, as OAG data indicates that several of its transatlantic routes feature just one weekly flight, including those to Agadir and Lamezia Terme. The Airbus A330-200, boasting a capacity of 332 seats, departs YYZ on Thursdays and returns from TIA on Fridays. The crew's extended stay in Southeast Europe for a week presents some logistical challenges, such as increased accommodation and meal costs, especially during the peak travel season.

Booking statistics reveal that between May 2025 and April 2026, approximately 315,000 round-trip passengers traveled between North America and TIA, averaging 863 passengers daily, despite the lack of direct flights. Most travelers utilized connecting services through major airlines such as Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, and British Airways. Notably, Toronto was identified as the second-largest North American market for travel to TIA, following the Greater New York area. While demand for such routes remains robust, the average base fare for YYZ to TIA was a modest $313, translating to a low cost of US 7.2 cents per nautical mile. In comparison, fares to other European destinations like Madrid hovered around $465, underscoring the competitive pricing structure Air Transat is aiming to maintain.

In addition to its new routes, Air Transat has plans to expand its service to three more U.S. cities, with further details expected soon. The airline is not alone in enhancing international connections; Air Serbia has reintroduced service from Belgrade to YYZ, while Air Canada has launched flights from YYZ to Budapest, marking its first foray into Hungary in recent years. The competitive landscape for air travel from Toronto to Central and Eastern Europe is evolving, with TIA, Belgrade, and Budapest emerging as key destinations for travelers, despite some remaining unserved routes. With an eye on the future, Air Transat is poised to solidify its presence in the transatlantic market as it continues to explore new opportunities and cater to the diverse needs of its passengers.
