Algeria Welcomes Direct Negotiations Between Morocco and Polisario Front

Algeria Supports Initiation of Direct Talks Between Rabat and Polisario Front

On May 25, 2026, during the celebration of Africa Day, Algerian State Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, announced his country’s endorsement of the newly initiated direct negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front. This diplomatic effort, which is under international supervision, marks a significant step in addressing the long-standing issue of Western Sahara, a territory that has been the center of contention for decades. The announcement was made at the headquarters of the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Attaf highlighted the recent developments in the Western Sahara dossier. He expressed optimism regarding the dialogue process, which began earlier this year, emphasizing that it aligns with Algeria's longstanding position advocating for direct negotiations as the sole pathway to a sustainable resolution.

Attaf's remarks came amidst the theme of this year's Africa Day celebrations, which focused on the critical issue of water sustainability. He reiterated Algeria's firm belief in the validity of its stance on Western Sahara, stating that the recent progress in negotiations reaffirms its historical advocacy for a diplomatic resolution. The minister pointed out that Algeria has consistently called for direct dialogue between Morocco and the Polisario Front, viewing it as essential for achieving a fair and lasting solution that respects the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination in accordance with United Nations resolutions, particularly referring to resolution 2797 of the Security Council. He underlined that a resolution to the Sahrawi question is crucial for maintaining stability and security across the Maghreb region.

Broader African Initiatives and Regional Stability

In addition to addressing the Western Sahara conflict, Attaf dedicated a substantial portion of his speech to Algeria's broader African policies and the challenges facing the continent. He advocated for the renewal of Algeria's diplomatic strategy in Africa, citing the expansion of its diplomatic network from 29 to 38 embassies in recent years. Furthermore, he highlighted initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity, such as the development of Air Algeria's African routes and the increase in scholarships for African students, which now total 8,000 annually.

On the economic front, Attaf emphasized Algeria's commitment to continental integration projects, including the Trans-Saharan road and gas pipeline, as well as railway connections to Sahel countries. He also referred to contracts signed during the recent intra-African trade fair held in Algeria, which totaled an impressive $23 billion.

Moreover, Attaf addressed several regional crises affecting Africa, reaffirming Algeria's support for the UN-led political process in Libya and calling for coordinated international efforts to maintain the country's unity. Regarding Mali, he advocated for dialogue and a comprehensive political solution to preserve the nation's territorial integrity. He also reiterated Algeria's commitment to the unity of Somalia and condemned the establishment of a representation by a separatist entity.
