Burkina Faso's Stance on Moroccan Sovereignty
In a significant diplomatic reaffirmation, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabé Abroad, reiterated Burkina Faso's unwavering support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara during a press briefing held in New York. This statement came after Traoré's meeting with Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. "Our position has not changed regarding the Moroccan identity of the Sahara," Traoré stated emphatically, underscoring Burkina Faso's consistent diplomatic alignment with Morocco's territorial claims.
Support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan
During the discussion, Traoré expressed strong support for Morocco's autonomy plan for the Sahara, which has received backing from the United Nations. "We continue to endorse this autonomy plan; this is our position, and we remain steadfast in this commitment," he affirmed, highlighting the importance of regional stability and cooperation in the Sahel. Furthermore, he commended the initiative launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI aimed at enhancing access for Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean, a move that is expected to foster economic and diplomatic ties in the region. Traoré noted that task forces have been established in various concerned countries to facilitate collaboration and the next steps in this initiative, signifying a proactive approach to regional cooperation.
