Celebrating Youssef Chahine: A Tribute at FIDADOC Film Festival

Honoring the Legacy of Youssef Chahine at FIDADOC

The Agadir International Documentary Film Festival (FIDADOC) recently celebrated the centenary of the renowned Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine, a pivotal figure in Arab and African cinema. This tribute, held on a Tuesday, focused on Chahine's extensive body of work, his remarkable journey in the film industry, and the vital efforts surrounding the preservation of his cinematic legacy. Organized in collaboration with the Institute of Africa, this homage is part of the 'Mediterranean Season 2026' initiative, featuring a series of activities in Agadir and Bordeaux aimed at introducing or reintroducing audiences to the filmmaker's universe. Highlights of the event included screenings of restored films, a lively DJ set, and immersive audio experiences that delve into Chahine’s life and work.

Preserving a Cinematic Heritage

During the event, Egyptian producer and director Marianne Khoury emphasized that celebrations for Chahine’s centenary began in the autumn of 2025 across various international film festivals, with further events planned for 2026 in Egypt, India, Japan, the United States, and at the Arab World Institute in Paris. She elaborated on efforts to safeguard the filmmaker's legacy, noting that significant work has been undertaken over the past decade to collect, categorize, and enhance Youssef Chahine's archives, in collaboration with journalist and film critic Catherine Ruelle. "This endeavor has brought together nearly three tons of archival materials, including various documents, audio recordings, and testimonies, which now serve as an invaluable resource for studying his work," Khoury stated.

Ruelle, who had numerous interactions and interviews with Chahine throughout his career, recalled that the project to consolidate audio archives was initiated shortly after the filmmaker's passing, reflecting a longstanding commitment to preserve and transmit his legacy to future generations. She also noted that Chahine’s films, although fictional, provide profound insights into Egyptian society and continue to influence multiple generations of filmmakers. Furthermore, Ruelle advocated for strengthening archiving initiatives and increasing events dedicated to this heritage, insisting that the transmission and dissemination of his successors' works represent the most effective means of perpetuating the filmmaker's memory.

Through this gathering and the accompanying programming, FIDADOC aims to highlight the contemporary relevance of Youssef Chahine's work, whose humanistic perspective, freedom of expression, and artistic boldness continue to inspire new generations of filmmakers well beyond the Arab world. Notable films such as "Central Station" (1958) and "The Land" (1969) offer critical insights into the social and political realities of his time, while works like "Alexandria... Why?" (1978) reflect a more introspective approach, exploring his personal trajectory and complex relationship with those in power.
