Telgte has emerged as a crucial hub for strawberry plants in Germany, with nearly 70% of the strawberries sold in the country sourced from the wholesaler "KRAEGE Beerenpflanzen." However, the operational conditions for fruit growers have become increasingly challenging, as highlighted by fruit farmer Markus Staden. In light of these difficulties, Staden has expanded part of his production to Morocco, where he cultivates and sells strawberry plants to farmers across Germany and Europe. During our visit to his farm in Telgte, he discussed the various burdens that growers face, including stringent regulations surrounding plant protection and fertilization, which complicate business operations. Additionally, rising labor costs pose a significant challenge for fruit growers, with wages being substantially lower in Morocco—where strawberry farmers shoulder only 20% of the labor costs compared to their German counterparts.
Moreover, the water requirements for strawberries cannot be overlooked. In Germany, farmers are subjected to a multitude of regulations; what once required a single page of documentation now necessitates 40 pages of reports and attachments for each application. This regulatory landscape makes production in North Africa a more streamlined and efficient option for growers like Staden.
Fruit Farmers in Germany Facing a Crisis
The situation for fruit farmers in Germany is precarious. As Markus Staden from "KRAEGE Beerenpflanzen" pointed out, not all farmers have the resources to relocate their operations abroad. He serves on the board of the fruit-growing association and has increasingly become aware of the myriad issues plaguing farmers in the region. The situation is dire; Staden notes that last year, a fruit farm in Germany closed its doors every other day. Alarm bells are ringing among fruit farmers in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), prompting them to draft an urgent letter outlining their demands to the government. Staden emphasizes the critical nature of these requests for support and action.
Currently, there are three active strawberry farms in Münster, which include Bäcker's Erdbeer- und Spargelhof, Hof Lütke Laxen, and Hof Spielbrink, all of whom are grappling with these challenges. The collective struggle of these farmers underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to support the agriculture sector in Germany.
