The vibrant city of Rabat is currently hosting the Chinese Film Week, a cultural event organized by the Chinese Cultural Center, which began on April 29, 2026. The opening ceremony was attended by a distinguished gathering of filmmakers from both Morocco and China, marking a significant occasion aimed at enhancing cultural exchanges between the two nations.
This noteworthy event aligns with the cultural cooperation program set for 2024-2028, which seeks to bolster the ties between Morocco and China through the medium of cinema. The festivities commenced with a screening of the film "Chang An," setting the tone for a week filled with cinematic exploration and appreciation.
Running until May 4, 2026, the Chinese Film Week is supported by the Chinese embassy in Morocco and the China Film Administration, along with collaboration from the Moroccan Cinematographic Center (CCM) and the Hiba Foundation. This initiative showcases contemporary Chinese cinema through a selection of five recent feature films, offering audiences a glimpse into the dynamic evolution of the Chinese film industry.
Beyond its artistic merit, the event serves as a vital platform for interaction among Moroccan and Chinese audiovisual professionals, fostering new opportunities for collaboration and co-production. Chinese Ambassador to Morocco, Yu Jinsong, emphasized the significance of this event, noting that it is the first time in years that the Chinese Film Week is being held in Rabat. She highlighted cinema as an art form that transcends borders and languages, and expressed hopes for strengthened cooperation in audiovisual production, cultural industries, and talent development between the two countries.
In a similar vein, Mohamed Reda Benjelloun, director of the CCM, reaffirmed the center's commitment to organizing the Chinese Film Week, reflecting on the shared rich cultural history between Morocco and China. He remarked that film remains one of the best mediums to discover and appreciate each other's cultures. Marwane Fachane, the general director of the Hiba Foundation, added that this cultural event aims to introduce contemporary Chinese films to Moroccan audiences, with all films being produced within the last two years. The diverse programming includes historical epics, popular comedies, and narratives grounded in social realities, showcasing the creativity, diversity, and modernity of Chinese cinema.
