Cultural Exchange Initiative Between Morocco and Sicily
On June 16, 2026, Mehdi Qotbi, the president of the National Museum Foundation (FNM), hosted a significant meeting in Rabat with a delegation of mayors from Sicilian cities. This gathering was centered around fostering discussions on culture, ceramics, craftsmanship, and collaboration. The Sicilian delegation, which included representatives from the Made in Sicily Ceramics District as well as the municipalities of Caltagirone, Santo Stefano di Camastra, Burgio, Sciacca, and Erice, was accompanied by the Vice President of the Italian Association of Ceramic Cities (AICC) and students from the regional artistic high school of Santo Stefano di Camastra.
The visit is part of a broader initiative aimed at cultural exchanges, coordinated with Maryam Nassif, the Consul General of Morocco in Palermo, as outlined in a statement from the FNM. The Sicilian mayors expressed their intention to establish a partnership with the FNM that would facilitate the signing of a cooperation agreement involving the Sicilian region. This collaboration is poised to promote mutual exhibitions; one focused on Sicilian ceramics, a vital aspect of Sicily's cultural identity, which could be showcased in Moroccan venues such as the prestigious Al Batha Museum of Islamic Arts in Fez and the National Ceramics Museum in Safi. Simultaneously, Moroccan ceramics would be featured in regional ceramic museums across Sicily.
The overarching goal of this initiative is to cultivate sustainable exchanges between Sicily and Morocco in both cultural and institutional sectors, positioning ceramics as a medium for dialogue, peace, and multiculturalism within the Mediterranean space. This meeting not only emphasizes the rich cultural ties between Italy and Morocco but also enhances the friendship and cooperative spirit that unite these nations.
