His impact was celebrated recently at a gathering organized by the National Library of the Kingdom of Morocco (BNRM) and the Moroccan Writers’ Union (UEM) on the fortieth day following his death. Esteemed colleagues and literary enthusiasts highlighted El Khoury’s distinctive qualities and his role as a "singular literary phenomenon" in the contemporary history of Morocco, alongside fellow literary icons such as Mohamed Zafzaf and Mohamed Choukri.

During the event, Mohamed El Ferrane, the director of the BNRM, remarked on the rich legacy of creativity and high moral standards that Driss El Khoury left behind. He emphasized that although the writer's physical presence has been lost, his memory and contributions to literature will endure. Known for his honesty, loyalty, humility, and deep human commitment, El Khoury worked tirelessly to enhance literary creation and narrative forms in Moroccan literature.

Abderrahim El Allam, president of the UEM, expressed that the loss of El Khoury has created an irreplaceable void in the literary community. He affectionately recalled how many of his friends and family referred to him as "Ba Driss," reflecting the warmth and familial connection he fostered with those around him. El Allam noted that Driss El Khoury had diverse interests spanning journalism and short stories, excelling in narrative techniques, storytelling, and descriptive writing. Moreover, his passion for visual arts and cinema was evident in his creative writings, including short stories and journalistic articles.

Youssef El Khoury, Driss's son, shared insights into his father's linguistic style and creative approach, describing his works as both "sober" and "challenging." He characterized "Ba Driss" as an exceptional figure, not just a traditional father, but a brother and friend who embraced life fully. He remembered him as the "spoiled child" of the family, someone who lived life freely and authentically until his last breath, emphasizing his kindness and sincerity.

Throughout the gathering, which featured a video tribute and an exhibition of El Khoury’s personal items, attendees unanimously praised his literary achievements and his unique sense of humor. His contributions to Moroccan literature are marked by a courage to explore human and societal realities that had long remained on the periphery.

Born in 1939 in Casablanca, Driss El Khoury was a significant figure in both literature and journalism in Morocco.
