Egyptian Tycoon Expands Moroccan Hotel Empire with $250 Million Financing Package

Expansion of the Moroccan Hospitality Sector

Kamel Abou Aly, a prominent Egyptian hotel magnate and founder of Pickalbatros Hotels & Resorts, has successfully secured a substantial financing package worth $250 million. This significant funding, provided by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Attijariwafa Bank, marks a pivotal moment for the group's growing operations in Morocco. The financing aims to facilitate the acquisition of additional hotels, upgrade existing properties, and refinance existing debts, showcasing the ambitious expansion plans of Pickalbatros in the Moroccan hospitality market.

The financing package is notably earmarked for the acquisition of two prestigious hotels in Casablanca, namely the Sofitel Casablanca Tour Blanche and the Mövenpick Hotel Casablanca. In addition to these acquisitions, the funds will support property enhancements in key tourist destinations such as Marrakech and Agadir. With this investment, Pickalbatros aims to bolster its presence in Morocco, where it currently operates nine hotels with over 2,700 rooms. This expansion is set to enhance the group's footprint in one of North Africa's most vibrant tourism markets.

Strategic Financial Restructuring and Growth

The financial arrangement not only focuses on growth but also addresses the existing financial commitments of the company. By refinancing its existing debts, Pickalbatros can manage its financial obligations more effectively while pursuing its expansion goals. The structure of this financing package is designed to accommodate both capital expenditures and refinancing needs within a single framework, thereby streamlining the group's financial operations.

In a statement released by Zilla Capital, the exclusive financial advisor overseeing the transaction, it was highlighted that the financing comprises three tranches, denominated in two currencies, demonstrating a strategic approach to managing international financial obligations. This funding initiative aligns with a broader $350 million investment program planned by Pickalbatros for the period of 2026 to 2029, which includes not only acquisitions and refurbishments but also environmental upgrades, further solidifying the company's commitment to sustainable development within the hospitality sector.

As the Moroccan hospitality industry continues to thrive, Pickalbatros Hotels & Resorts is poised to play a significant role in shaping its future. By leveraging this financing package, the company not only aims to enhance its portfolio but also to contribute to the overall growth of Morocco's tourism sector. The successful integration of acquisitions alongside property upgrades and strategic debt management ensures that Pickalbatros remains a key player in the North African hospitality landscape.
