French Players Remain Focused Ahead of World Cup Quarterfinal Against Morocco

In a recent press conference, French national team players expressed their commitment to staying focused on the upcoming quarterfinal match against Morocco in the 2026 World Cup, rather than engaging in any controversy surrounding the appointment of Argentine referee Facundo Tello. The players emphasized that their concentration is solely on the game, dismissing any distractions related to the officiating crew. This statement comes in the wake of criticisms directed at Uzbek referee Algez Tantashiev's performance during France's Round of 16 match against Paraguay, which has heightened scrutiny over officiating decisions in the tournament.

The selection of Tello as the referee has sparked memories of past controversies, particularly regarding the competitive sensitivities between France and Argentina. This is especially relevant given the potential for both teams to meet again in the final of the championship. Dayot Upamecano, a defender for France, firmly stated that the team has always chosen to ignore the identity of the referee, focusing instead on their preparations for the match against Morocco. He remarked, "We have never concentrated on who the referee is. Our focus is on Morocco, and what we want is to win the match, as that is what matters most."

Additionally, third-choice goalkeeper Ruben Reiser urged against inflating the significance of the referee's appointment, suggesting that referee selections are made based on competence. He stated, "We should not fall into a trap of paranoia; it is your role (the media) to amplify such issues. While there is lingering bitterness from the 2022 World Cup final, this is part of the game. If these referees are here, it is because they possess the level required to officiate matches in the tournament."

It’s worth noting that the FIFA has a history of appointing referees who may officiate matches between teams that could meet later in the tournament. For example, a Dutch referee was assigned to officiate a match between France and Sweden despite the possibility of facing each other later on, highlighting that such appointments are not unusual.

Facundo Tello, at 44 years old, brings significant international experience to the upcoming match. He has officiated two matches in the 2026 World Cup thus far, including South Africa against South Korea, and Canada versus Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tello also has prior World Cup experience, having managed three matches in the 2022 tournament, including the quarterfinal clash between Morocco and Portugal, which Morocco won 1-0. Known for his propensity to issue cards, Tello has handed out 16 yellow cards and one red card since his World Cup debut.
