French Tourists Fall Victim to Elaborate Scam in Morocco, Losing €25,000

French Couple Duped in Morocco: A Cautionary Tale

During what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation in Marrakech, a couple from Beaune, Côte-d’Or, experienced a harrowing ordeal that turned their dream getaway into a financial nightmare. In early April 2026, they fell prey to a sophisticated scam that involved false reimbursements and a fraudulent payment terminal, resulting in a staggering loss of nearly €25,000. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that travelers may face, particularly when abroad.

The couple's journey began on a seemingly positive note. Arriving in Morocco on March 28, they were greeted with warm hospitality that included luxurious accommodations, a private chauffeur, and an itinerary filled with excursions. "The hotel was beautiful, and everything seemed perfect at first," the 59-year-old woman recounted, reflecting on their initial excitement.

However, their experience took a turn for the worse when they were approached by a woman who promised a partial refund for their travel expenses, alongside enticing promotional offers for future trips. To avail themselves of these benefits, they were instructed to swipe their credit cards through what was presented as a secure payment terminal. Caught in a relaxed atmosphere, bolstered by an invitation to a villa where they enjoyed a traditional hammam, the couple unwittingly walked right into the trap.

Upon returning to their hotel, the couple was shocked to discover unusual debits on their bank accounts and the alarming disappearance of their credit cards. Their total financial loss, as reported by local news sources, amounted to nearly €25,000. In the aftermath of this traumatic experience, the couple promptly filed a complaint and reached out to their bank for assistance. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, no refunds have been issued thus far, prompting them to seek the intervention of a banking mediator in hopes of recovering some of their lost funds.

Deeply affected by this incident, the couple expressed feelings of disbelief and devastation, stating that they felt as if they had lost their life savings to an exceptionally well-orchestrated scam. "This situation has left us in shock," lamented the wife, highlighting the emotional toll the experience has taken.

As travelers, it is crucial to remain vigilant and cautious, especially when faced with offers that seem too good to be true. This incident not only emphasizes the importance of safeguarding personal financial information but also serves as a warning to future travelers to be aware of potential scams that may lurk in the shadows of their vacations.
