GNV Expands Ferry Services to Morocco, Enhancing European-Africa Connectivity

Grandi Navi Veloci Enhances Services in Morocco

Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV), a prominent ferry operator under the ownership of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC)—the world’s largest container shipping group—is significantly expanding its operations in Morocco. This strategic move comes as Morocco is increasingly positioning itself as a vital transport bridge connecting Europe and Africa. Recently, GNV celebrated the launch of its latest vessel, GNV Aurora, in Tangier, marking the beginning of enhanced ferry services that link Morocco with key destinations in Spain and Italy.

This expansion not only reinforces Morocco's growing significance in Mediterranean transport but also prepares ferry and logistics operators for anticipated increases in passenger and cargo traffic ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host alongside Spain and Portugal. The country has become a crucial component of GNV's regional strategy, driven by its expanding port infrastructure, a robust travel market fueled by its diaspora, and its rising profile as a host for global events.

Morocco has a rich history of hosting significant sporting events, having previously organized the Africa Cup of Nations twice, the FIFA Club World Cup three times, and the recent World Bank Group and IMF Annual Meetings in Marrakech in 2023. These experiences are expected to further bolster the country's position as a gateway between Africa and Europe in the lead-up to the 2030 World Cup.

Investment in Fleet Expansion and Environmental Sustainability

According to reports from The Maritime Executive, GNV's expansion is a key component of its fleet renewal initiative, which boasts a staggering investment of over €1.3 billion (approximately $1.5 billion). This financial commitment underscores the increasing importance of intra-Mediterranean routes and the rising demand for passenger and cargo transport between North Africa and Europe. Over the past two decades, GNV has been a steadfast operator in the Moroccan market, having transported more than six million passengers on this route alone. In 2025, the company recorded over 465,000 passengers on its Moroccan services.

The GNV Aurora, a state-of-the-art ferry weighing in at 53,000 gross tons, was officially named in Tangier on June 1 after its arrival in Genoa earlier in March. Initially, the vessel operated on domestic routes to Palermo before being designated for the Morocco service. It will now operate between Tangier Med, Barcelona, and Genoa, with its sister ship, GNV Virgo, expected to join the same route on July 1. Both vessels represent GNV's commitment to sustainability as they are the company's first LNG dual-fuel ferries, constructed by Guangzhou Shipyard International in China. GNV Virgo was delivered in October 2025, while GNV Aurora was handed over at the end of January 2026.

Each ferry measures 218 meters and features 426 passenger cabins, accommodating more than 1,700 passengers and providing 2,780 linear meters of cargo space. Designed for operational speeds of 25 knots, these vessels can utilize LNG and are equipped for bio-LNG and synthetic LNG usage. They also feature shore-power capabilities, emissions reduction systems, and heat-recovery technology, which allows for onboard electricity generation.

With an investment of approximately €360 million for the two LNG-powered sister ships, GNV Aurora marks the fourth new ferry that GNV has received from GSI. Established in 1992, GNV now operates a fleet of 26 ferries across 33 routes in eight countries. While the first phase of its fleet renewal plan has been completed, GNV has already placed orders for four additional LNG-powered ferries from GSI, with the first expected to arrive by the end of 2027, followed by subsequent vessels at six-month intervals.

For Morocco, this new ferry service enhances the strategic status of Tangier Med as one of Africa's foremost transport and logistics hubs. It reinforces the country's expanding role in connecting African markets with European trade and travel corridors.
