Enhancing Bilateral Trade Between India and Morocco
On August 24, 2026, Jitin Prasada, the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, as well as Electronics and Information Technology, articulated India's commitment to enhancing its trade relationship with Morocco. During his official visit to Morocco, scheduled from August 24 to 25, Prasada emphasized the necessity of diversifying bilateral trade, expanding market access, and fostering new avenues for investment and industrial cooperation. This visit is crucial as it coincides with the 7th Session of the India-Morocco Joint Commission, which Prasada will co-chair alongside Omar Hejira, Morocco’s Secretary of State to the Minister of Industry and Trade, responsible for Foreign Trade.
The Joint Commission meeting aims to evaluate existing economic and commercial collaborations while identifying new opportunities for mutually beneficial engagements. Discussions will encompass a wide array of sectors, including trade and market access, the production and supply of fertilizers, investment opportunities, industrial cooperation, customs regulations, agriculture and food safety, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, as well as energy and mining. Other significant topics will include renewable energy, digital transformation, transportation and logistics, AYUSH, tourism, education, and skill development.
New Agreements and Cultural Exchange Initiatives
Among the anticipated outcomes of the Joint Commission meeting is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on food safety between Morocco’s National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA) and India's Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI). This agreement is designed to streamline the exchange of information regarding the safety and quality of imported food products, establish food testing laboratories, and enhance analytical methods. Additionally, the MoU aims to promote technical cooperation in various aspects, including import procedures, quality control, sampling, testing, packaging, and labeling of food items.
Furthermore, a Cultural Exchange Programme covering the period from 2026 to 2030 is expected to be inaugurated, aimed at boosting the exchange of artists and professionals between India and Morocco. This initiative will facilitate participation in festivals and exhibitions, strengthen heritage conservation efforts, and establish robust institutional connections among museums, libraries, and archival institutions.
India and Morocco have a long-standing bilateral relationship with ample potential for enhancing trade and investment. In 2025, bilateral merchandise trade reached approximately $4 billion. Key exports from India to Morocco consist of refined petroleum, pharmaceuticals, vehicles, synthetic textiles, food products, and spices, while Morocco primarily exports phosphates and fertilizers to India. During his visit, Prasada will engage in high-level bilateral discussions with senior Moroccan officials and participate in the India-Morocco Joint Business Forum, aiming to uncover new opportunities for trade, investment, partnerships, and joint ventures.
