In a significant advancement for Moroccan craftsmanship, Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fez has secured a new patent, numbered MA 65542, for an innovative device designed to facilitate the cutting of traditional zellige tiles. This groundbreaking invention opens new avenues for modernizing one of Morocco's most esteemed artisanal industries while maintaining the authenticity that has characterized this craft for centuries, rooted in the expertise of skilled artisans, known as "maâllem."

The invention, conceived by researcher Zakaria Hashim, presents a novel approach to automating the zellige production process. Unlike previous attempts that aimed to replace artisans, this invention seeks to replicate their precise hand movements during the cutting process. This ensures that the quality and traditional essence of Moroccan zellige remain intact, all while reducing production time and costs, thus enabling the creation of various intricate designs more efficiently.

Preserving Heritage Through Innovation

In an interview with Hespress, Zakaria Hashim elaborated on his motivation behind this project, which stems from a desire to address the challenges facing the Moroccan zellige industry, particularly concerning production costs and accessibility. He emphasized that Moroccan zellige remains a high-cost product to produce, prompting him to explore ways to make this cultural product more accessible to a broader segment of the population without compromising its unique character.

Hashim's innovation also emphasizes the importance of preserving this artisanal heritage. He noted that the sustainability of this industry heavily relies on the presence of specialized artisans, which underscores the necessity of developing technical solutions to ensure the longevity and transfer of this heritage to future generations.

The invention is based on a mechanical system that employs four linear motors and a rotary motor, designed to replicate the manual movements that artisans perform while cutting zellige tiles. Unlike previous attempts that utilized conventional cutting machines or industrial equipment that failed to respect the unique characteristics of Moroccan zellige, Hashim's approach aims to mirror the very hand movements that artisans use, thus preserving the authenticity of the final product.

Despite obtaining the patent, Hashim clarified that the project is currently in its theoretical phase and has not yet been developed into a functioning industrial prototype due to the high costs of its technical components. He acknowledged that the machine he designed remains a conceptual study, highlighting that actual production will require significant financial investment, particularly for precision positioning systems and mechanical motors, which tend to be expensive.

Hashim expressed his hope that future conditions and support will enable the transformation of this engineering concept into a tangible machine capable of benefiting the Moroccan artisanal sector.

This innovative patent reflects a continuous search for ways to balance the preservation of Morocco's artisanal heritage with the benefits of technological advancements, particularly in a sector where zellige stands as one of the most prominent cultural and architectural symbols. Hashim asserted that technology should not replace artisans but instead serve as a tool to assist them in enhancing production and ensuring the continuity of this craft, allowing for the preservation of the Moroccan zellige identity while better meeting the growing demand both domestically and internationally.
