In a significant move to commemorate Youth Day, which coincides with the birthday of King Mohammed VI, the Moroccan monarch has granted clemency to a total of 667 individuals who had been sentenced by various courts within the kingdom. This announcement was made by the Moroccan Ministry of Justice in an official statement released on August 20, 2026. According to the statement, the royal pardon affects 526 incarcerated individuals as well as 141 convicted persons who are currently at liberty.
Among the 526 beneficiaries of this clemency, the decision results in the complete remission of the remaining prison sentences for seven individuals. For an additional 517 prisoners, the sentences have been reduced or partially revoked, showcasing the monarch's commitment to mercy and rehabilitation. Furthermore, the King has also converted life sentences for two convicts into fixed-term imprisonments, allowing for a more hopeful outlook on their future.
Additionally, the royal pardon extends to 141 individuals who are not currently incarcerated. Such pardons are traditionally bestowed in Morocco during significant national and religious holidays, with Youth Day being a particularly notable occasion for the King to exercise his constitutional right to grant clemency.
