Liebherr's LPS 500 Crane Marks a Milestone in African Port Operations
Liebherr has successfully shipped its innovative LPS 500 crane to the Port of Casablanca, Morocco, which is operated by Marsa Maroc. This state-of-the-art rail-mounted crane, also known as the LPS 550, features an impressive electric drive system and a towering 48-meter boom, specifically designed for efficient bulk cargo handling. With a maximum lifting capacity of 144 tons, this crane represents a significant advancement in the port's operational capabilities.
Significantly, this LPS portal slewing crane is the first of its kind to be commissioned in Africa, reinforcing Liebherr's commitment to enhancing the continent's cargo handling infrastructure. The delivery of this crane is a crucial component of Marsa Maroc's ambitious Marsa 2030 development program, which aims to modernize and expand the capabilities of Morocco’s major ports.
Enhancing Port Efficiency and Flexibility
According to Liebherr, the newly installed crane is designed to offer remarkable flexibility, enabling it to service a diverse range of vessel classes effectively. Its rail-mounted portal design not only ensures substantial lifting capabilities but also optimizes valuable quay space, a critical factor in busy port environments. Moreover, the advanced drive systems incorporated into the crane facilitate precise movements and consistent handling performance, even during intensive operating cycles, thereby enhancing overall efficiency.
This project builds on the established partnership between Marsa Maroc and Liebherr, following the successful delivery of three LHM 550 mobile harbor cranes in 2024. The Port of Casablanca stands as one of Morocco's primary commercial gateways, encompassing over 450 hectares and more than 8 kilometers of quays, with the capacity to accommodate up to 40 vessels simultaneously. In 2025 alone, Marsa Maroc managed to handle over 19 million tonnes of cargo and nearly 1.1 million TEUs at its Casablanca operations.
Marsa Maroc operates a total of 35 terminals across 21 ports, dealing with approximately 67 million tonnes of cargo annually. The company's commitment to enhancing its infrastructure extends beyond Casablanca, with additional Liebherr cranes on the way to terminals in Nador and Tangier, further solidifying its position as a leader in the regional cargo handling market.
