Strong Performance Despite Challenges
Matthias Walkner, alongside his Spanish co-pilot Oriol Mena, achieved a commendable second place in the T4 category during the second stage of the Rallye du Maroc. The duo successfully navigated a demanding 423-kilometer loop around Zagora, which included 300 kilometers of competitive racing. The day was ultimately won by the Argentine team of Jeremías Gonzalez Ferioli and Gonzalo Rinaldi, who showcased an outstanding performance.
Just four kilometers before reaching the stage finish line, a tire issue threatened to derail the Austrian-Spanish team’s progress. However, Walkner and Mena managed to cross the finish line with a mere 40-second deficit, demonstrating their resilience. Reflecting on the day's challenges, Walkner noted, "The route was extremely demanding and varied, with football-sized stones on the course that could easily take a competitor out of the race."
Maintaining Overall Leadership
In the overall standings of the T4 SSV class, Walkner and Mena continue to lead with a significant margin, boasting more than a six-minute advantage over their competitors. Walkner expressed his satisfaction with the day's results, stating, "I am very happy with the day, and the learning curve is definitely trending upwards." Looking ahead, the competitors will face a lengthy 591-kilometer loop on the fourth day, starting and ending in Zagora. This stage includes a substantial 363 kilometers of competitive racing, complemented by a 228-kilometer liaison stage, promising further excitement for participants and fans alike.
