In a significant counterterrorism operation, Morocco's Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations has successfully thwarted multiple attack plots orchestrated by a group affiliated with the Islamic State in the Sahel region. The operation, which took place across several cities including Agadir, Taroudant, Casablanca, Hajeb, Tetouan, Fqih Ben Salah, and Safi, resulted in the arrest of ten individuals, among whom was a minor. This coordinated action underscores the Moroccan government's commitment to combating extremism and ensuring national security.
The arrested suspects are reported to have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and received direct directives from the group's Sahel branch to execute attacks within Morocco. Authorities have characterized these plots as “extremely dangerous” and noted that they were in an “advanced stage of preparation.” During the raids, law enforcement officials uncovered various items that raised alarm, including bladed weapons, military-style attire, and manuscripts that detailed the construction of explosive devices.
Particularly alarming was the discovery of a vehicle in Inezgane, near Agadir, which had been modified to operate on butane gas, indicating a potential plan for a suicide bombing or a car-ramming attack. The last major jihadist incident in Morocco occurred in 2023 when three individuals linked to the Islamic State fatally attacked a police officer in Casablanca, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by extremist groups in the region.
