Tragic Case of Wassim: A Father's Alleged Violence
A former Moroccan karate champion, Mohammed Taoussi, is set to stand trial in Belgium this month, facing severe allegations that could result in a life sentence due to the tragic death of his 3-year-old son, Wassim. The 32-year-old Taoussi is accused of committing acts of violence against his son, which included depriving him of food and necessary medical care, alongside allegations of physical assault. The trial is slated to commence on September 28 at the Luxembourg Assize Court in Arlon, with the jury selection scheduled for September 23. Tragically, Wassim lost his life on November 25, 2023, after being discovered unconscious in their home located in Habay-la-Vieille. Emergency responders attempted to revive the young boy before he was transported to a hospital in Arlon, where resuscitation efforts continued for several hours. Initially, the cause of death was uncertain, prompting a relative of Wassim’s mother to express concerns about Taoussi's treatment of the child, leading authorities to mandate an autopsy.
Following the autopsy, Taoussi was arrested several days later and has since remained in pretrial detention, adamantly denying any accusations of physical abuse or homicide. Investigators have gathered testimonies from neighbors and family members, suggesting a pattern of violence in the lead-up to Wassim's tragic passing. Reports indicate that neighbors often heard Taoussi yelling at Wassim and were disturbed by sounds resembling slaps, while some relatives claimed to have witnessed instances of physical punishment, including occasions when Wassim refused to eat.
Uncovering a History of Violence

He had previously been treated in an emergency department for a shoulder injury in April 2022 and had spent several weeks hospitalized in spring 2023 due to a displaced femur fracture. Prosecutors state that Wassim ultimately succumbed to fatal internal bleeding in his skull, attributed to multiple impacts or blows to the head. In addition, authorities reported discovering numerous other injuries on the child's body, some of which might indicate strangulation.
Mohammed Taoussi, who was born in Morocco in 1994, had a promising career in karate, achieving multiple national championships and representing Morocco on international platforms. He relocated to Belgium in 2017 to further his athletic pursuits and eventually met Wassim’s mother, Norma Prester, in the Liège region. Their son was born on June 2, 2020, and the family settled in the Habay area. Tragically, Prester passed away at the young age of 28 in a road accident on February 27, 2023, leaving Taoussi as the sole caregiver for Wassim. Close acquaintances noted a concerning shift in Taoussi's demeanor towards his son following Prester's death, describing him as increasingly impatient and harsh. Interestingly, school staff painted a different picture, describing Taoussi as a caring and attentive father, who seemed engaged in his son’s development and did not exhibit any signs of violence during school hours. Teachers reported that Wassim appeared happy to see his father, highlighting the complexity of this tragic situation.
