Upcoming Visit of King Mohammed VI to France
French media reports indicate that King Mohammed VI of Morocco is anticipated to make an official visit to France during the third week of January 2027. This visit is currently being organized through diplomatic channels between Rabat and Paris. According to the French newspaper "La Tribune Dimanche," a source from the diplomatic community has revealed that the Élysée Palace proposed this timeframe to the Moroccan royal court, although the exact date has yet to be confirmed. A decision is expected in the coming weeks.
One of the key issues on the agenda for this visit is the signing of a bilateral treaty between Morocco and France, which is reportedly nearing completion. The same source mentioned that the committees tasked with finalizing the treaty held their last working session on September 21, 2026.
The forthcoming treaty is set to be a significant milestone, as it will mark the first of its kind that France signs with a non-European country, akin to the Quirinal Treaty signed between France and Italy. This treaty, which was concluded in Rome on November 26, 2021, and came into effect on February 1, 2023, serves as a model for enhanced bilateral cooperation between nations.
The treaty is structured to include a preamble and 12 articles, outlining cooperation in various fields, such as foreign policy, security and defense, European affairs, economy, industry, digital transformation, sustainable development, research and innovation, as well as education, culture, and youth engagement. Additionally, it will establish mechanisms for consultation and coordination between the two nations, along with a shared agenda for cooperation.
