Moroccan Lawyers Demand UN Intervention Against Israeli Law Permitting Execution of Palestinian Prisoners

Moroccan Rights Activists Urge United Nations Action

On Friday, a coalition of Moroccan lawyers delivered a significant message bearing the signatures of 50 organizations and hundreds of individuals from 22 countries to the United Nations office in Rabat. This initiative aims to call for intervention to abolish the Israeli law that allows for the execution of Palestinian prisoners. Khaled Soufiani, a Moroccan lawyer and coordinator of the 'Arab Legal Group for the Prosecution of Israeli War Criminals,' established in Rabat in October 2025, emphasized that this message coincides with the observance of Palestinian Prisoners' Day, which takes place annually on April 17.

In a statement to Anadolu Agency, Soufiani elaborated that the letter, addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, highlights the urgent need for the international community to act against this controversial law. He stated that the letter comes in response to recent legislative actions taken by the Israeli Knesset, which approved the law on March 30 with a majority vote of 62 in favor, compared to 48 against and one abstention. This law permits the execution of Palestinian prisoners accused of deliberately killing Israelis, a move that has been met with approval from right-wing political factions in Israel.

The law specifically targets 117 prisoners currently held in Israeli jails. Soufiani has urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to take immediate action to protect these Palestinian prisoners and ensure their safety. He also highlighted that the message implores the United Nations and its affiliated bodies to fulfill their legal and ethical responsibilities by taking tangible and deterrent measures.

The issue has gained urgency as reports of human rights violations against prisoners have surged alongside the genocidal campaign launched by Israel against Gaza, which has been ongoing for two years, commencing in October 2023. Currently, over 9,600 Palestinians are incarcerated in Israeli facilities, including 350 children and 73 women, many of whom are suffering from torture, malnutrition, and medical neglect, leading to the deaths of dozens, as reported by various Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations.
