Minister Riyad Mezzour Clarifies His Statements
In a recent development that has captured widespread attention, Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade, Riyad Mezzour, issued a public apology to Moroccans living abroad following a controversy surrounding his recent comments, which had sparked significant debate on social media platforms. The controversy arose from Mezzour's remarks made during a lecture to the Association of Graduates of Central Schools and Higher Institutes in Morocco. He pointed out that two individuals in the audience posed questions which he interpreted as showing a sense of superiority over Morocco. In a bid to address their inquiries, he responded in a direct manner, laced with humor, aiming to remind them of Morocco's significance, saying, "Morocco is greater than all of us."
However, a video clip circulating online cut his remarks short, leading to a misinterpretation that suggested he was addressing all Moroccans living abroad. Mezzour vehemently rejected this notion, labeling it as "unreasonable" and a misrepresentation of his true message. He emphasized his profound respect for Moroccans worldwide, acknowledging the challenges and sacrifices that expatriate families face in maintaining their national identity and raising their children with a connection to their Moroccan heritage, especially given his own lengthy experience of living outside Morocco.
Furthermore, the minister admitted that some expressions used during the discussion may not have been appropriate, extending his apologies for those as well. Despite the misunderstandings, he reiterated that his intention was never to offend the Moroccan diaspora, but rather to respond to individual perspectives shared during that particular encounter.
