Morocco Crowned AFCON Champions Following Senegal's Title Forfeiture

Senegal Stripped of AFCON Title Amidst Controversy

In a dramatic turn of events, Morocco has been declared the champions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after Senegal was stripped of its title due to a ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This unprecedented decision, announced on a Tuesday night, has sparked intentions from Senegal to appeal the ruling. The controversial circumstances surrounding the title change stemmed from the final match held on January 18, which ended in chaos, including protests from players and fans alike.

The CAF's ruling indicated that Senegal had "forfeited" the final by leaving the pitch in protest over a contentious late penalty awarded to Morocco. This incident escalated tensions, leading to an attempted pitch invasion by angry Senegalese supporters. Following a 15-minute delay during which Senegal's players returned to the field, Moroccan player Brahim Diaz missed a critical penalty opportunity, which ultimately resulted in the final proceeding to extra time. Senegal capitalized on this situation to score the decisive goal, securing a 1-0 victory in the match.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the actions of some Senegalese players, labeling their exit from the field as "unacceptable" and asserting that violence has no place in sports. Initially, CAF imposed significant fines and bans exceeding $1 million on both Senegalese and Moroccan players due to the chaotic scenes that unfolded, which included on-field altercations and attempts by Moroccan ball boys to interfere with gameplay by stealing the Senegal goalkeeper's towel. Despite these disruptions, the sporting result was initially allowed to stand.

Following a thorough review, CAF's appeals board ultimately ruled in favor of Morocco after determining that Senegal's conduct violated specific regulations outlined in Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON rules. These stipulations clarify that any team that refuses to play or departs the field without the referee's consent shall be deemed the loser and eliminated from the competition. Consequently, with Senegal's 1-0 win annulled, Morocco was awarded a 3-0 victory by default, marking their first AFCON title in 50 years.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation expressed its acknowledgment of the decision while emphasizing that its appeal was not aimed at contesting the teams' performances but rather at ensuring the proper application of regulations for the sake of maintaining a clear and stable competitive environment in African football. Senegal has swiftly announced plans to contest this ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland.

In a social media post, Senegalese defender Moussa Niakhaté, currently with Olympique Lyonnais, shared an image of himself holding a trophy accompanied by the phrase "Pour l'éternité" (for eternity), alongside a remark implying disapproval of CAF's decision. This incident has cast a shadow over what was otherwise a successful tournament in Morocco, which is also set to co-host the World Cup in 2030. Protests have emerged in Morocco, with demonstrators calling for government funds to be redirected towards the country's struggling healthcare system rather than towards new stadiums and infrastructure for the World Cup.

Additionally, the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to commence in Morocco on March 17, has been postponed to July, just days before its initial opening match. CAF cited "unforeseen circumstances" for this delay, although no further details were provided. Luxolo September, CAF's head of communications, acknowledged that the decision was not made lightly and was a result of multiple factors.
