Morocco's Counterterrorism Success Against Daesh Affiliates
In a significant counterterrorism operation, Morocco's Central Bureau for Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) announced on July 7, 2026, that it has successfully thwarted multiple planned attacks orchestrated by a group affiliated with Daesh, particularly targeting sensitive locations and public security. This operation led to the arrest of ten suspects across various cities including Agadir, Taroudant, Casablanca, Hajjeb, Tetouan, Fqih Ben Salah, and Safi. Preliminary investigations revealed that these individuals had pledged allegiance to Daesh and received direct orders from the group’s branch in the Sahel, illustrating the ongoing threat posed by terrorist organizations in the region.
Evidence of Intent to Carry Out Attacks
The BCIJ's statement highlighted the chilling evidence uncovered during the raids, which included bladed weapons, military-style attire, and documents with instructions for creating explosive devices. Authorities also discovered a modified vehicle believed to be intended for a suicide bombing or a vehicle-ramming attack. Additionally, security forces recovered butane gas cylinders and pressure cookers, some filled with nails and connected to electrical wiring at a warehouse utilized by the group. This operation underscores the persistent and evolving nature of the threat from extremist factions in the Sahel, where Daesh and Al-Qaeda affiliates have been increasingly active in countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Notably, BCIJ statistics indicate that over 130 Moroccan fighters have joined Daesh branches in Africa since 2015. The BCIJ has played a crucial role in dismantling numerous militant cells and has made over 1,000 arrests of suspected terrorists since its inception.
