Morocco's Ambitious Plans for Hospitality Growth
As the excitement builds for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Morocco is taking significant strides to enhance its hospitality sector by expanding its hotel capacity. The nation has set forth an ambitious plan to add 60,000 hotel beds in preparation for this prestigious tournament, which it will co-host alongside Spain and Portugal. This initiative aims not only to accommodate the influx of international visitors during the event but also to bolster the country’s long-term tourism strategy.
According to Fatim-Zahra Ammor, the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, Morocco has already made substantial progress by introducing approximately 45,000 hotel beds over the past four years. This expansion has come in tandem with a significant increase in international visitor numbers and improved air connectivity, reflecting Morocco's rising appeal as a travel destination.
Tourism Growth and Economic Impact
In 2025, Morocco welcomed a staggering 19.8 million tourists, marking a remarkable 14 percent increase compared to the previous year. With an eye toward the future, the Moroccan government has set an ambitious target of attracting 26 million visitors annually by 2030. This growth is crucial as tourism plays a vital role in the Moroccan economy, contributing approximately 7 percent to the nation's gross domestic product. Additionally, the sector is a key driver of employment and foreign exchange earnings, making its expansion essential for the country's economic health.
Ammor emphasized that Morocco's perspective on the upcoming FIFA World Cup extends beyond merely hosting a sporting event. The government views this opportunity as a catalyst for long-term tourism development that will benefit the country well beyond the tournament's conclusion. To support this vision, Morocco is investing over 190 billion Moroccan dirhams (around 20 billion U.S. dollars) in critical infrastructure projects, including railways, highways, airports, and stadiums, ensuring that the necessary facilities are in place to support both the event and future tourism growth.
Furthermore, the government is committed to diversifying tourism offerings, aiming to expand attractions beyond traditional hotspots like Marrakech and Agadir. By enhancing air connectivity and developing targeted marketing strategies, Morocco seeks to attract an even broader range of international visitors, particularly from markets such as China, the United States, and the Middle East.
