Morocco's Ambitious Hotel Expansion for World Cup 2030
In a strategic move aimed at enhancing its tourism infrastructure, Morocco has announced plans to increase its hotel capacity by an impressive 60,000 beds, which represents approximately a 20% boost to the current total. This initiative is part of the country's preparations as it gears up to co-host the FIFA World Cup 2030 alongside Spain and Portugal. According to Fatima Zahra Amour, the Moroccan Minister of Tourism, this expansion is not merely a goal but a catalyst for continued growth and development in the tourism sector, which plays a crucial role in the Moroccan economy.
The Moroccan tourism sector has been gaining traction following the national team's remarkable performance in the recent World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals and becoming the first African and Arab team to advance to the semi-finals in Qatar four years ago. This newfound global attention provides an opportunity for Morocco to capitalize on its tourism potential, which employs hundreds of thousands of citizens and contributes approximately 7% to the national GDP.
Amour emphasized to Reuters that the 2030 World Cup is viewed as a stimulus for broader economic benefits rather than an end in itself. The government is set to invest over 190 billion dirhams (around 20 billion dollars) into improving infrastructure, including railways, roads, airports, and sports facilities, to ensure a successful tournament.
Current Status and Future Goals
Recent official data indicates that Morocco has already added 45,000 hotel beds over the past four years, bringing the total to just over 300,000. Last year alone, the country welcomed nearly 20 million tourists, making it the top destination for visitors in Africa. Looking forward, Morocco aims to attract 26 million tourists by 2030, and the Central Bank of Morocco anticipates that tourism revenues could soar to unprecedented levels of 161 billion dirhams by 2027, up from 138 billion dirhams in 2025.
The increase in air routes from Europe has also played a significant role in boosting the tourism sector. Amour stated that the next phase of growth will concentrate on enhancing visitor numbers from China, the United States, and the Middle East through improved air connectivity. Furthermore, the government is committed to diversifying tourist destinations beyond traditional hotspots like Marrakech and Agadir. Plans are underway to transform the capital city, Rabat, known for its historical landmarks and museums, into a hub for cultural, sporting events, and business travel. Amour noted, "We need investments that create lasting value for Moroccan tourism."
