Significant Funding for Agricultural Development in Morocco
Morocco has been officially designated as one of the priority nations for the United States' ambitious "Food for Progress" initiative in 2026. This program is tailored to enhance agricultural productivity and foster agricultural trade within emerging economies. As part of this effort, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through its Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) aims to not only bolster agricultural development in Morocco but also create new commercial avenues for American agricultural products in international markets.
Investment and Economic Growth in the Agricultural Sector
For the fiscal year 2026, the Food for Progress initiative is anticipated to allocate up to $226 million in new cooperative agreements. These funds are intended to support various five-year projects, each typically carrying a budget ranging from $28 million to $35 million. In addition to Morocco, several other countries including Bangladesh, Bolivia, Ecuador, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand have also been selected as beneficiaries for this year's program.
The USDA FAS has outlined two primary objectives for the Food for Progress program: enhancing agricultural productivity in developing and emerging markets, and expanding trade in agricultural products within these regions. Furthermore, the initiative aims to improve the competitiveness of agricultural sectors in partner countries while promoting private sector involvement and innovation.

Morocco's inclusion in this program can be attributed to its ongoing national efforts to enhance its agricultural sector. A recent report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts that Morocco's economy will experience a growth rate of approximately 4.4% in 2026, primarily driven by stronger agricultural output. Additionally, Morocco is recognized as a leading global supplier of phosphate fertilizers, particularly to the United States.
The OCP Group, Morocco's foremost fertilizer producer, has been instrumental in establishing the nation as a dominant player in the global fertilizer market. Holding 70% of the world's phosphate reserves, OCP stands as the largest producer of phosphate and phosphate-based products. Recently, the company shipped 90,000 tons of phosphate fertilizers to Latin America, despite significant disruptions in global trade routes due to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
This robust market position is also reflected in OCP’s financial performance, reporting a 17% increase in revenues for 2025, totaling MAD 114 billion (approximately $11.4 billion), driven by sustained international demand and favorable market conditions.
